‘The Beginning’ Dance Costume
2014
Performance
Rule of Capture I
Saine Ensemble
Costume made for the Saine Ensemble performance of Rule of Capture: Part I, The Beginning. The performance comments on the topical issue of the Finnish mining industry — the waste and use of natural resources. The costume was made from layers of delicate metallic silk organzas, where the fabric was slowly heat oxidised to bring out the golden and copper tones, identical to the colours of the minerals found in the surroundings. As the dancer imitates the movement of the falling rocks, the garment delicately frays and tears to demonstrate the consumption of natural resources in today’s society.
