Hand-stitched fabric construction
‘The Growing Square’, is a growing sculpture consisting of hundreds of cubic formations. Starting from one 8x8 cm square in the center, small pieces are hand-stitched one by one to the structure to create a sculpture that grows from the inside out.
Made from a variety of woven fabrics, the white and translucent subtle hues enhance the work’s intricacy, whilst creating a delicate surface of light, shadow and reflection.
The Growing Square is part of a series of mathematically-inspired works handmade by Deepa Panchamia. The underlying concept is to constantly add to the structure and document how it evolves over time.
